Mark
Sableman, a partner in Thompson Coburn LLP’s Intellectual Property group, has won a Burton Award
for Legal Achievement.
Mr. Sableman's award is based on his article titled “Artistic
Expressions Today: Can Artists Use the Language of Our Culture?” The article
was published in a special issue of the Saint Louis University Law Journal,
which honored the late Senator Thomas F. Eagleton. Sableman accepted his award
during a formal banquet held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on
June 16, 2008. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Steven Breyer was the featured
speaker.
Each year the Library of Congress presents Burton Awards for
Legal achievement, focusing on plain, clear and effective expression by
lawyers, law firms, and law students. Professional articles and other writing
by lawyers from the top 1,000 firms in the U.S. are judged as part of the
competition, with only the best chosen for Burton Awards. Various related
awards are also presented during the ceremony.
Twice before Thompson Coburn LLP lawyers have been honored with
Burton Awards. Chip Fendell won the award in 2001 for his article "UCITA Is
Coming!!! Part Two: Practical Analysis for Licensors' Counsel", and last year
Dean Franklin and Tim Krieger won it for their article, "Liability of Computer
Maintenance Providers Under Copyright Law: Storage Tech. Corp. v. Custom
Hardware Eng'g & Consulting, Inc."
