Thompson Coburn partner Booker T. Shaw was honored by Missouri Lawyers Media this month for his role in helping Bayer secure the No. 3 largest defense verdict in Missouri in 2022, according to the publication.
Judge Shaw was a member of the defense team for Bayer in Alesi et al. v. Monsanto Company, one in a series of lawsuits alleging Monsanto’s weedkiller Roundup causes cancer. This trial was the first in the St. Louis area, and the first to examine claims from three unrelated residential users of Roundup. The plaintiffs had sought $30 million in damages. At the conclusion of a monthlong trial, a St. Louis County jury deliberated just a few hours before returning a defense verdict on September 1, 2022.
Missouri Lawyers Media’s Top Verdicts & Settlements awards honor settlements and trial victories for defendants and plaintiffs.
Thompson Coburn associate Nick Schnell assisted on the matter. Bayer counsel in the trial also included Manuel Cachan of Proskauer, Jennifer Saulino of Covington, and Erik Hansell, Tim Larkin and Kate Dickenson of Husch Blackwell.
