Thompson Coburn Delivers Title IX Training to the University of Hawai‘i System

December 10, 2024

A team of Thompson Coburn higher education attorneys, including Aaron LaceyScott Goldschmidt, and Leah Northener, recently traveled to the University of Hawai‘i to deliver comprehensive Title IX training. The training was for all institutions within the Hawaii system, including the flagship and community colleges.  Presented to a diverse group of personnel that included the President and senior leadership team, the four-day training event was held on the main campus at Manoa, just a few miles from Waikiki.

The training sessions were well-received by participants, who appreciated the practical insights and real-world examples provided by the attorneys. The team's knowledge and engaging presentation style fostered a positive and informative learning environment.

The success of the Title IX training was the result of a collaborative effort between Thompson Coburn and the University of Hawai‘i – in particular, the invaluable contributions and support of Vice President for Administration Jan Gouveia, and Carrie Okinaga, Kara Moran, and Elisabeth Contrades from the Legal Affairs and University General Counsel’s office, as well as Jenn Rose, Jeanie Sohn, and Kimber Deans from the Office of Equity Assurance.

In addition to delivering the in-person training, the Thompson Coburn team assisted the University of Hawai‘i in drafting its new interim Title IX policy and administrative procedures, which were published on August 1, 2024, and recorded training for all University employees on the requirements of the new Title IX regulation.

Staff members at the university have been regular attendees of Thompson Coburn’s higher education webinars for years, which led to a lively debate over whether Aaron Lacey’s webinar background is real or digital (it is real!). This ongoing collaboration demonstrates the firm's commitment to providing comprehensive legal services to higher education institutions.
