Tonya Oliver Rose Discusses Healthcare's Cybersecurity and Staffing Challenges

September 26, 2024

Thompson Coburn partner Tonya Oliver Rose was quoted extensively in a PropertyCasualty360 article on cybersecurity risks and staffing challenges in the healthcare sector.

Shortages of healthcare staff can lead to high patient loads and increased administrative work for providers. The COVID-19 pandemic compounded staffing problems, explained Tonya.

"A lot of people who were in the healthcare industry said, 'I don't want to do this anymore. This feels too risky,'" she said. In addition, healthcare workers can sometimes get so mired down in administrative tasks and complying with regulations that they don't feel the job is about taking care of people anymore.

AI is entering healthcare to improve efficiency and reduce costs, but it also brings new cybersecurity risks. Tonya said it is unclear how factors like bias and discrimination that may be introduced into AI models will be viewed in the face of liability and lawsuits. "That may be an opportunity where insurance could play a role," she said. "If you're not able to get your full protection from the vendor who created this AI product, is there an insurance product that could provide that?"
